Certain nobles bring with them an entourage; kings espcially so, but lesser nobles find themselves quite fond of bringing along a legion of sycophants everywhere they go. Contrast this to the old nobility, the landed gentry that has kept their rule with an even hand and clever dealings necessitating a more clandestine approach. The Merkur Family were most akin to this latter group. Nobility in all but name, they were major donors to the Academy on the floating islands, exercising wide political power over certain decisions within it. With the need for secrecy vital to their dealings, the Merkur sought out suitable servants for their needs. Enter the Nebyl family. 
The Nebyl were once famed in Encore for being the height of hospitality, producing many a fine maître d'hôtel. However, at times all it takes is a swift regime change and the maison the family has worked in for generations to change hands to send everything into disarray. Without work and naught more than cooks to the gentry and glorified barkeeps to the peasantry, they wandered until a certain individual approached them. An offer was made, a binding of families in accordance with their ability and principles. "Should the Nebyl become the designated servants of the Merkur family," the man explained, "They shall not want for anything. Serve well and faithfully, and you need not be troubled with the particulars of politics, nor be bereft of home again."
For a family already possessed of servile nature, only a single answer could be sensible. 
In this manner have the Nebyl worked for the Merkur, personal servants and managers of their estates as they conducted their business. Petia was no different, born though in time without a partner. Needless to say, she was still trained in the arts her family practiced, whether culinary matters, or in the realms of entertainment, or even fine workings and attention to detail in her duties. Alas, no Merkur was born within five years of her, leading to her fate being decided. Upon reaching her nineteenth year, she must leave the service of the Merkur. A technical reneging on the original agreement, centuries of secretive manipulation and breeding have left the Nebyl exceptionally servile to any they recognize as an authority above them, incapable of lying and becoming excessively bonded to the one they are partnered with. 
Alas, Petia was bound to none. Indeed, upon reaching her nineteenth year, she left the Merkur estate with a hefty severance, never to return. Maybe what she seeks now is a proper master, someone for whom she can truly serve their every need. She even entertains the thought of selling herself into slavery, but decides against it when she sees the sort of unsavory individuals from Nocturne. Perhaps she seeks to regain her family's heritage, and once more become the Maître d'hôtel of a famous maison like her ancestors before her.
